Meet Johnny Kai, a third-year Cromwell student studying a Bachelor of Business (International Business Management)/Bachelor of Arts (Sports Studies & International Relations) at The University of Queensland. Originally from Hong Kong, Johnny moved to Brisbane to study but he maintains strong connections to home. Johnny recently returned from two weeks in Hong Kong where he contributed to the marketing and communications involved with the HSBC World Rugby SVNS Series.

Q: What inspired you to get involved with the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens, and can you describe your role in the tournament?
A: My journey with Hong Kong, China Rugby began in 2022 as a Community Engagement Officer. I focused on expanding rugby’s reach beyond the expat community by activating partnerships with educational institutions and charity programs. Later, I transitioned to the Commercial department at the end of 2023, where I contributed to marketing and communication strategies for the HSBC World Rugby SVNS Hong Kong Series in 2024 and 2025. These efforts led to remarkable milestones, including a sold-out event in 2024 to bid farewell to the iconic Hong Kong Stadium and record-breaking ticket sales at the new Kai Tak Stadium in 2025, which boasts a 50,000-person capacity.
Q: Can you share any behind-the-scenes experiences or interesting moments from your involvement?
A: The 2025 Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens was an unforgettable experience. Being part of the team delivering the first-ever international sporting event at one of the world’s most expensive stadiums was both exciting and challenging. Collaborating with new stakeholders at the venue and adapting to its increased capacity required innovative approaches. The team and I launched new digital platforms and campaigns tailored to introduce the tournament to a broader audience.
Q: What advice would you give to other students or young professionals looking to get involved in international sporting events?
A: I encourage students to immerse themselves in diverse activities like volunteering or internships across different sectors. These experiences provide invaluable learning opportunities and help build networks that broaden exposure in the industry.
Q: Finally, what’s your favourite thing about living at Cromwell College?
A: My favourite aspect of Cromwell College is its strong sense of community and the diverse platforms it offers students. The balance between academics and social life has helped me grow holistically – not just as a student but also as a leader, friend, and active contributor. Whether through formal events, study sessions, or casual conversations on the deck, there’s always space to connect, reflect, and evolve.
